David Lidington is Mr Clean (but you pay for his soap)

David Lidington has paid back the money he paid for toiletries

Mr Lidington, who represents Aylesbury, submitted regular claims for cleaning, even sending his bath mat and towel to be professionally washed.

On one day in July 2006, the shadow foreign minister collected four different receipts from the same dry cleaner near Westminster.

In May 2006, he charged two Boots receipts, totalling £51.09, which included Wellman Vitabiotics, L’Oreal moisturiser, Sensodyne toothpaste and body spray.

The claim was approved.

Yesterday, the father-of-four admitted that some claims could be seen as “over-generous”. He has referred them to the Conservatives’ scrutiny committee.

He said: “These were reasonable claims for laundry and are within the rules. I do not have a washing machine in my flat. I accept that many people would see them as over-generous, that is why I paid back the money I claimed for toiletries 10 days ago.”
